Yesterday, I was climbing Volcan Pacaya for the second time. I asked the guide about the lava, which hikers can see flowing from a few feet away. Is the lava ever really dangerous, I asked?
No, the guide said. In fact, the people living in the area prefer when there is a steady supply of lava. [...]
By my standards (certainly not everyone’s) I spent a ridiculous amount of money in Belize. A basic place to sleep, simple meals (many cooked in the hotel) and maybe one beer set me back about 30-35 dollars a day. Part of the problem is that everything (even stuff in supermarkets) has to be shipped to [...]
Mangroves are amazing:
Pirates? Pirates!
Brother and sister team:
Swimming spot at the “Split.”
Arriving in Caye Caulker, Belize, I felt like I was back in Africa.
No, not because of all the black people, silly. (Although that didn’t hurt.)
It was so hot that I couldn’t even wear a bra. That’s right, vanity and perkiness gave in to holyshititssohotout.
I started to remember why the first time I went [...]
I am in Caye Caulker, Belize with my brother right now.
Belize is wonderful, and it is really interesting that a five hour drive brings one out of Latin America and into the Caribbean (at least culturally.)
However, this country is extremely expensive. Accommodation not so much but food, drink and internet prices are sky [...]
On my way to Flores today. I’ve spend four months in Guatemala and now I’m finally going to Tikal.
Yesterday night I was sitting in a bar in Antigua (Kafka) with some friends.
The bartender (with a proper English accent) asked me: “Are you in the Peace Corps?”
“Uhhh,” I said. “I’m not even American.”
“Oh, Canadian. [...]
I’m in Guatemala City right now, waiting to pick my brother up at the airport. He should arrive in about an hour.
I certainly had an unusual week in San Pedro. Unusual in that I didn’t do as the drunken backpacking Romans do, and instead decided to have a healthy week. I felt emotionally drained… [...]
Dear tourists in Guatemala:
Stop taking photographs of indigenous people like they are animals in a zoo. One of these days you’re going to get bitchslapped, and you’ll deserve it.
Dear female backpackers in Guatemala:
If you’re not at the beach, stop wearing short-shorts. It is totally inappropriate in such a conservative country. And it’s not even [...]
For what is supposed to be a happy hippie paradise, a “backpacker’s Shangri-La,” sometimes I feel like a sadness hans over San Pedro la Laguna. Although this is a lovely place to visit, I am glad I don’t live here long-term… I sort of feel that it would be like that part of the Neverending [...]
I have a favourite pastry vendor in San Pedro. There are a lot of such vendors – mostly older Mayan ladies with baskets filled with banana bread, carrot cake, chocolate cookies and more.
My favourite is the odd one out: a funny little boy named Luis who’s discovered my weakness for cinnamon buns.
“Quieres pan?” he [...]
