Fraud sucks.
At least, I’m gonna assume that what happened was fraud. In order to save on transaction fees, I take out large wads of cash when I go to the ATM. Always the maximum possible – 2000 quetzals, or just under 300 Canadian dollars.
So when I spied a 72 dollar ATM withdrawal on my online bank statement, I knew it wasn’t me.
Where did this transaction come from? The only explanation I can think of is that one of the ATMs that I’ve used was equipped with some sort of scanner that lets people rip off bank card information. Apparently, this happens all over the world.
Luckily, I only had a tiny amount of money in my ATM-accessible chequings account, so the thief was only able to withdraw a little.
And also luckily, I spied this transaction only an hour after it took place, so nothing more was taken.
I called my bank in Canada immediately, and they froze all my cards. Tomorrow, they said, they will conduct a fraud investigation, which means who-knows-what.
Unfortunately, for the time being, I can’t access any cash, and I have about fifty centavos to my name. Fortunately, I have some good friends around here that can spot me some money.
