My plan to rent an apartment in Xela starting in September was foiled because it turns out I would have to sign a lease for longer than I am willing to commit to. I’d need to get a lawyer, too.
Sign a lease? Get a lawyer? I thought this was an incredibly unregulated country. According to the local newspaper, one three out of 27 downtown bars have a license, for instance. Or in Semuc Champey, I was able to descend into a dodgy cafe with nothing but a bathing suit and a candle, without signing a single waiver. I guess when it comes to apartments, things are different.
So I started looking for shared accommodation. I’ve narrowed it down to two places: Either Dicap residence or “Yoga House.” Dicap is a huge, concrete jungle of shared apartments. 850Q a month (just over a hundred dollars) gets you a big bedroom in an apartment shared with maybe five or six other strangers. The place is incredibly clean, and a block from Central Park. Who knows who I would be sharing an apartment with, and I think that people would be coming and going more frequently.
Yoga House is a shared house of 10 bedrooms. The place also house’s Xela’s yoga studio, and classes are free with rent (not that I’m into yoga, but I guess I could be.) The bedrooms are between 750-900Q a month. The place as a whole seems a little less nice to look at, but it might offer a more fun communal living arrangement. I’m gonna be in Xela from at least September to March, and I’d like to make friends where I live.
Yeesh, what to do. These are the kind of decisions that I wouldn’t have to make if I was moving from place to place every week, but alas.
